Teton Mountain s
By Chrissy WElls
description
The Teton Mountain range is located on the border of Idaho and Wyoming, and is also a part of the Rocky Mountain range. It was originally named by French travelers “les trios tétons”, meaning the three breasts. The Shoshone Indians named the mountain range Teewinot, meaning many peaks.
The main peaks that make up the Tetons are called the cathedral group, and they are Grand Teton, Middle Teton, and South Teton. There are actually nine peaks in total in the Tetons. Besides the three Tetons, there is Mount Owens, Teewinot, Mount Moran, Mount Wister, Buck Mountain, and Static Peak.
The Teton Mountains are most notable because of the way the mountains are formed. On the Eastern side, in Wyoming the mountains seem to spring up from the ground, with no foothills. The Teton Mountains rise between 5,000 to 7, 000 feet from the valley floor. This is because of the Teton fault is the base of the mountains, pushing them up at their sharp incline. On the Western side, in Idaho the Teton Mountains look like rolling foothills, and not the mountains they actually are.]
On clear days, if you look to the East in Rexburg, you can see the Teton Mountains. If you look to the Northwest, you are able to see the Sawtooth Mountains.
