Cauldron Linn Canyon
BY Rachel King
description
Imagine an old lava canyon that the Snake river runs through condensed, bubbling and spitting with power. Formidable rock cliffs loom on either side. And several waterfalls crash down every mile or so. This is Caldron Linn Canyon, also less commonly known as Star Falls and it is a truly wondrous natural wonder of Idaho.
The area here is completely natural. There are no bars to keep you from walking right up to the cliff edge which is good and bad. It is good because the scene is not marred by a gate. It is bad because the drop is steep and dangerous. So, make sure that you take care.
Further up the river there is a place to swim and fish and kayak. In the spring when the snow melt increases the amount of water in the river, many adventure seekers take to the white-water rapids on rafts and kayaks. This is the place for pure adventure!
There is some interesting history that happened here. In 1811, after the time of Lewis and Clark, the Astorians took the snake river on a quest to get to the Pacific Ocean easily. They were making good progress until they came into Caldron Linn and lost a canoe when it crashed against a rock and broke to pieces. Caldron Linn was such a dangerous path that they decided against pursing the river path any further and continued on by foot. The rapids here are intense, (around class 4 in the spring) and with the rocks all around it is a foreboding sight. You can find pieces from this expedition like traps and guns in the National Idaho Museum.
