Lake Pend Oreille
BY DANIELLE JONES
description
Lake Pend Oreille is way up in the panhandle of Idaho. It was formed during the ice age by glaciers moving south from Canada, and it's name was given to it by a French Canadian fur trapper. Having a depth of 1,158 feet makes it the fifth deepest lake in the United States, and the largest lake in Idaho. It's 144 miles of shoreline welcome people to come to see and enjoy it.
The view of the lake from the shore line provides a splendid view of the lake and the reflections of the sky; combining the beauty of the sky and the lake in one view. The view from the hills and hiking trails are just as wonderful, looking down and out over the land and the lake. This is a great place to go if you're looking for the natural beauty of lakes and mountains.
Wildlife is also in abundance around the lake. Bears, deer, elk, moose, wolves, bald eagles, hawks, and bluebirds live in the forests. Water activities like boating, water skiing, swimming, and fishing are things to do on the lake. Fishing is especially popular because the lake supports a wide variety of fish. Unlike boating, you can go ice fishing on the lake in the winter months. Camping and hiking are also available all year round. Some campsites available require fees, but not all of them do. Fishing and boating, hiking and sightseeing, are also free as long as your boat is licensed and you have a fishing license.
